I too had the same problem where I could not read my e-mail messages, why? Because of AVG Anti-Virus's E-mail Scanner. That's why all you need to do to be able to view your future e-mail messages that you get is disable certifying AVG's Email Scanner. If you have any other anti virus, then you should refer to the help file that came with it or check on the manufacturer's website on how to stop the anti virus from putting the footer that says it's checked the e-mails. I you are able to fix the problem then please leave a comment on how you did so.
This means that you won't be seeing the Message 'No threat found by AVG at the end of the message'. However AVG will still check for threats.
- Open up AVG Control Center by right clicking the AVG icon in your sys tray and selecting Launch Control Center.
- Double click on E-mail Scanner. (you can also click on E-mail scanner then click on properties)
- Click on button that says 'Configure'.
- Uncheck both the 'Certify Mail' check boxes under 'Email Scanning'.
- Click on 'OK' twice on both the screens
- Restart Microsoft Outlook 2007.
Why this works is probably because of the changes in outlook. When AVG (or perhaps any other Antivirus) tries to certify the e-mail messages, it probably tries to edit the code. Doing that then corrupts the code in the e-mail message (even if it is plain text) therefore causing Outlook to display a blank e-mail. So if you direct AVG to not edit the e-mail, just scan through it you shouldn't have any problems in reading it (hopefully). I'm sure that other Anti-Viruses also have the same problem, so you must direct them not to put in the certification footer and you should be able to download e-mail properly until Microsoft fixes the problem.

Great help! I really appreciate your posting about avg with Outlook 2007. I just installed Outlook 2007, and immediately had the problem of blank messages. Had no clue where to even start. After a few minutes I did a google search, and found your message. I have been using avg for several years. Bottom line..... Followed your simple instructions, and.... problem solved.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for taking the time to post your solution to the problem. I am looking forward to giving Outlook 2007 a test drive.
Rex

Hey Website,
ReplyDeleteI'd recommend you try turning off avg's e-mail checking for a while and see if AVG is the culprit or not. If the e-mails are still blank then it might be a problem at the web server's end or something's wrong with Outlook.
Hope this helps. Do let me know about the results.
Thanks A LOT!! It worked for me too.
ReplyDeleteThank you. First time I worked with Outlook 2007 and thought it was something to do with a new configuration feature. So thanks for letting me know it had to do with the AVG Free. I found one post that suggested turning off Email scanner - that didn't fix it. But turning on the Email scanner and unchecking boxes worked.
ReplyDeleteI had this problem in Outlook 2003. After reading your analysis, I did a little testing and found the following solution:
ReplyDeleteIf the body of an email does not show up, Open the Email. Select FORMAT, Select Plain Text, Click Yes to the message that says the RICH TEXT formatting will be lost, and the text then reappears. This appears to be an issue with Outlook 2003 trying to display RICH Text. Anyway this worked for me, I hope it can help someone else.
I had the same problem in my Outlook 2007. Though there was a difference. I didn't have AVG Antivirus. I didnt have any separate antivirus in fact. I searched the net vigorously and everyone talks about avg only.
ReplyDeleteMicrosoft had the solution.
see what Microsoft has to say on this....
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
Here is the solution...
1. Exit Outlook 2007.
2. Start Registry Editor.
• In Windows Vista, click Start , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
• In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type DisableEncryptedMessagePreview, and then press ENTER.
6. Right-click DisableEncryptedMessagePreview, and then click Modify.
7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
8. Exit Registry Editor.
...
If it works....Be happy.
Thank you so much for this, it had been bugging me for weeks and I couldn't figure out what else to tweak on Outlook that would make my emails appear correctly. A simple untick did the job perfectly. Cheers!

ReplyDeleteAll the above didn't work for me, however somehow I got to a microsoft chat that was free and within 10 seconds it was solved. We have McAfee, he simply asked to disable McAfee site advisor from start-> run-> type in the field services.msc
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe it as I had tried everything. Updates, installing uninstalling everything you can think of and nothing worked. And it was as simple as disabling a service. I'm surprised that with all the searching I did, nothing came up from the McAfee site! I hope this helps someone
Disabling McAfee's site advisor just worked for me! I've been wrestling with this problem for weeks and couldn't imagine that the solution was so simple. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteFantastic! Thank you.

None of these fixes worked for me, but I have NOD32. It appears that I have corrected the problem by upgrading from version 4.0 to 4.2, which claims "minor outlook fixes".
ReplyDeleteI was having same problem and running Avast.

I have at work Symantec Anty Virus and at Home Trend Micro. Now there are e-mails I can't see though I know they are there (all blank). Whn on the web interface all is there. It is also there with Windows Live Mail (at home)... why Outlook and how can I fix this?
anyone?
ReplyDeleteI am experiencing the same problem as the posting on 4/19/2010. I received an email but cannot see the content in Outlook 2007. I can read the content in my webmail and in my blackberry. This only happens with one specific sender who happens to be using lotus notes. I have received emails from other lotus notes users with no problem.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone who the cause?
Hello @ Anonymous above: I suspect that this time around the problem may be due to some kind of weird encoding being used by the sender. Perhaps persuading them to send e-mails in plain text may help? When I originally wrote this content, it was meant for the outlook beta, and I'm sure that MS has fixed most bugs since then. Ask the sender to send it in plain text (if possible), and see if that makes a difference.
ReplyDeleteWe have a similar, yet different problem. We recently converted from Lotus Notes to Outlook. There is a batch job that generates an email, sending it to a mail group. When the mailgroup was moved from Lotus to Outlook, the Subject and body of the email started coming out blank. We even tried re-creating the mail group within Outlook and it would not work. We couldn;t figure out the problem, so we moved the mail group back to Lotus where it continues to work fine. Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteAdded the domain @thesystemworks.com.au to the safe list and now i can see the body of messages.
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem as the 4/21/2010 post. The message is fine in web-mail but not on outlook. I've tried the uncheck the boxes on AVG but it still has not resolved the problem. Any other suggestions? The person whose e-mail come in blank uses webmail to send not lotus notes....
ReplyDeleteThis worked for me. I've been having problems viewing my emails and didn't know what to do. Thank you so much!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have Symantec Anti Virus. Now, how can I make changes to the configuration to resolve this issue, when the options are greyed out?
