If your iPod shuffle isn't working properly then this is probably a very useful post for you.
The iPod shuffle usually will not have any problems, but sometimes if something goes wrong during the installation/charging etc for the first time, this can cause your iPod to become "unresponsive"!
Usually the problems that occur are firmware/software problems, as the hardware on the shuffle is pretty sturdy and chances are it isn't damaged unless you did something to it.
Howevering, curing this problem is really easy. All you need to do is restore the firmware. Read this post and I'll explain how to do this (but chances are you won't need to do this)
First you must remember that if you restore the firmware on the iPod shuffle to factory it is going to get rid of all your songs and you need to upload it again.
This is what you need to do to restore your iPod to factory settings...
1. Click on Start
2. Then click on All Programs
3. Then you should see something called "iPod" in the all programs menu if you've loaded all of the software properly
4. Hover your mouse over "iPod" and another menu should pop up. In that menu you need to select "iPod Updater".
5. After that click on "iPod Updater" again when the other menu pops up ("iPod Updater" should have a iPod icon beside it)
This is going to open iPod updater. Now all you do is plug in your iPod and click "Restore"!
iPod updater is automatically going to update the software in your iPod.
Congratulations, now you've finished updating your iPod all you need to do now is put in songs again in your iPod (after it is charged of course) and your iPod is ready to go!
If this still doens't cure your ipod problems then just leave a comment and I'll try to give more specific instructions on how to make your ipod work, so that you too can enjoy the sweet music on the go!
Also, make sure that you have the latest software, if you purchased your iPod a while ago, then it is reccomended that you get an update. Before, when iPods were first created.. you needed to update the firmware on them through the iPod Updater. However, now a days, all you need is iTunes, so make sure you get the newest version of iTunes from the Apple Site.
Please read my other post on how to unplug the iPod
(click here) from your computer! If you fail to follow the instructions on this post, the music in your iPod may get corrupt, which also causes your shuffle to give the blinking orange and green lights error. Also, you might want to take a look at part 2 of this post. How to fix your iPod shuffle (an alternative way suggested by a reader) or use the search function to find more posts about fixing your iPod shuffle.

Hey I saw your post about Ipod Shuffle problems.
ReplyDeleteThis is my second shuffle, and I find that after a period of months, it just refuses to turn on.
Itunes will play mp3s from the Ipod when it's in the usb, but as soon as you pull it out, there's no response. Not even the charge light responds.
This is the second time it's happened with an ipod shuffle. Last time I just replaced it. Any ideas?

ReplyDeleteMy computer says that it cannot restore my iPod b/c it's corrupted. What should I do?!
ReplyDeletekaligo_la.ca@verizon.net
Hi, my name is Roberto, I´m Brazilian and my iPod Shuffles is presenting weird problems regarding its recognition by my PC. It turns out that it has been a month since I´m unable to connect it with my PC. Every time I try to do it, the USB doors just do not recognizite it. It is frustrating, ´cause I can´t charge the aparrel, neither load it with new songs. I´m about to give up, ´cause here in Brazil there´s no Apple stores, and I´ve bought my iPod on the internet. If you know anything that I can do in order to fix it, please tell me. I´ll be grateful. Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeletei figured out how to restore my ipod myself but the problem im habing is that after i restore it it still says i have no music, i cant sync and i only have 567 mb left so it says the music is on there according to space but i cant listen to it, the error light goes off
ReplyDeleteI'm using windows and my computer sees my shuffle, it sees the songs I've dowloaded to it, the battery light shows green but when I disconnect it from the dock and push play nothing happens and I get a code of lights that is not on my decoder card, one green then 5 orange. I took it to the genius bar and they restored it, put a couple of tunes on it, pushed play and it worked so I brought it back to my computer, plugged it in, put songs on it, when it said the update was done I ejected it, took it off the dock and now I get no music and the same strange code of lights. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI got my iPod shuffle in August, 2006 and it worked perfectly. I had to change my computer and so transferred all my songs to a new iTunes library on my new computer. (my computers are windows XP) I did everything I was supposed to do when using the ipod on a new computer; I synced the ipod, deauthorized the old computer and everything but it still wouldn't update when i dragged songs from my library to the ipod, only autofill would work. I recently downloaed the new ipod and itunes versions and now I am getting new error messages 1) "the ipod cannot be read from or written to" and 2) ipod cannot be updated, error ~50 has occurred". Now even autofill won't allow me to add new songs to my iPod! I am not a computer whiz and have no clue what to do! can you help?

I own an iPod shuffle 1GB and just restored it. I replaced my songs but now when I turn it on there is a constant green light on at the front and it will not play. Do you know what could be wrong?
ReplyDeleteThe evidence is clear that Apple has a very big problem with the Shuffle and that there should be a recall. The "Error -50 has occurred" problem has no simple or universally reliable fix. Apple simply has messed up this product and should own up to its mistake.
ReplyDeleteAfter 2 trips to the Apple Store and countless hours of research and attempted fixes of the dread "Error -50" I simply exorcised iPod Shuffle from my life. I sent it by registered mail to Steven Jobs and told him what he could do with it. I feel much better now.
ReplyDeletehaving problems with your ipod i fixed mine today ,i just used realpayer to manage my ipod everything has worked fine since then dump itunes!!!!!

i was reading your post and that didnt seem to match my problem. i have a 512 ipod shuffle..which i have a for a while and its just recently stopped responding. everytime i turn it on it flashes green and orange twice. ive tried uninstalling programs and reinstalling them but my computer doesnt respond to the ipod. when i try and open it .it says (The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. i really need this fixed and ive waited ages. thanks
ReplyDeleteWe have had our shuffle for about two months and now it will not charge. Just out of the blue you have to mash down hard on the shuffle while it is in the charger to make it charge. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to fix it.
ReplyDeleteI am having the same problem as another person who posted a message on this board.
ReplyDeleteI recently updated my hard drive and then reloaded everything back onto my computer. When I plug in my shuffle itunes starts and says it's syncing with the ipod. If I try to add any songs (using autofill or dragging and dropping) it says the disk cannot be read from or written to. I also cannot restore using itunes, it gives me error message #1418 and says an uknown error occurred. I tried to reinstall the drivers and the computer said it couldn't because the driver was not digitally signed, or was not signed properly. I tried entering the codes form part 2 of this blog into notepad and that didn't work either. I bought my shuffle in Canada and have recently moved to St. Kitts in the West Indies for school. There is absolutely nothing I can do from here to send it in to get fixed, or even to call apple for help. If anyone knows how to fix this please help, the shuffle is only a few months old. I am very frustrated.
Thank you

ReplyDeleteOk, so my computer had a virus and it never affected my ipod shuffle. I got it back three days ago, and my ipod was fine. My computer's memory had to get completely erased, so I had to erase my library and download all my songs again. It was fine until I tried turning my ipod on the next day. It's fully charged because it glows green, but that's all it does. It doesn't play at all, I think it's frozen. But I'm really scared that it couldv'e gotten a virus somehow, but I just don't know how that's possible. Please help me!
I wish i never updated itunes at all...one big mistake that i did...
ReplyDeleteEVERYTHING was working just fine until that stupid updater... I thought id do coz they kept bugging me about install the latest software crap... anyway... since then... i did just about anything i can from what the ipod support website had to offer. So...i just did this copy and paste appleipod.bat command in notpad...once and i thought i solved the problem...then i loaded the songs and halfway through... i thought id eject ipod but not dismount it...and put a different playlist instead...i wondered by doing that i might have aggravated the problem...anyway...after i had ejected...i dismounted and check to hear songs...and i did...excited...mounted it back in and restored blablabla...loaded new playlist and to my demise...the whole "could not be read or written to(1418)" problem came again...WTF...I lost sleep over this stupid crap... so i uninstalled the new version and intalled the software provided with my ipod shuffle.. and i did that...bonus, the updater/restore thing worked...but when i try to load song in ipod shuffle, same stupid problems kept occuring...i cant even begin to tell you how many time i had to install and uninstall...im going insane over this stupid piece of garbage... i think i might just stick with my sony...i think i give up... IF i got to and apple store, will they be able to replace it for me at no cost? bad side is i didnt keep the receit... all i know is that ive only had this thing for 6 months... i think ill stick with a cheaper mp3 player that would work just as well without the complications...Im happy with the drag and drop...grrr what to do...id hate to purchase batteries...anyone know of any mp3 that i can recharge???
For a while there everytime I plugged my shuffle in to charge...it wiped out my entire playlist. I finally had to go in, restore the original settings and manually load my songs back into the playlist on my shuffle. NOW, my left earbud isn't playing. If I pull the plug out of the shuffle about half way, the music stops playing in the right earbud and only plays in the left earbud. I've tested the earbuds and they're fine. Anyone else have this problem?
ReplyDeletei have ipod shuffle 1 gb my earphone produce extra resulting in verybad output but when i plug it in other gadget it works properly

ReplyDeleteHELPP!!!!!
How long should it take to restore the ipod shuffle cause mines been restoring for 15mins and te green bar hasnt moved
ReplyDeletemine too whats up with that
ReplyDeleteRestoring your ipod should only take about a couple of seconds or so. Just turn it off. Then turn it on, wait for 4 seconds, and turn it off again.
ReplyDeleteDavid - Yeah, many people out there seem to have this problem.
I got an iPod shuffle, the newer one for christmas last year. It never worked when I first got it and so I used another Windows computer to put music on it. But recently I got it working on my Windows computer. Then it started playing up, it would be recognised and the light would flash for a second, then a bubble would come up telling me that it had been recognised again, and it would do this repeatedly. Any reason as to why this would be happening?
ReplyDeleteThanks
ive tried to update the firmware and it did that alright, but when i turn it on and press play the light flashes green and orange, when i rolled back to thte factory settings the same problem happened...ive tried everything on this page, but still no luck....help would be greatly appriciated....cheers
ReplyDeletemy iPod was working fine but then one day i plugged it in and it started to flash with orange and green lights. if i look on iTunes it doesn't come up with the iPod and so i can't even charge or play my iPod! please Help !
ReplyDeleteCan someone please help me?! I got a 1GB shuffle for christmas (red) loaded with songs great. But every time I go to reload it, it reloads the exact same songs!! I complained to apple, they tested it and gave me a new one. Guess what, I just plugged it in and loaded some songs fine, but then deleted and tried again I got the exact same songs again!! I can't choose any tunes that weren't on the original load. I have restored my ipod and re-installed iTunes but no fix. Has anyone else had this problem??
ReplyDeletejust bought my shuffle yesterday and downloaded songs from I-tunes ok today my usb ports are disabled on the hub is this anything to do with my shuffle and if it is how do i cure the problem
ReplyDeletehi! i've got an ipod shuffle....it just wont play any music...sometimes it blinks green-orange-green about three times....i tried restoring it ..but it dint help...cud plz reply at "mohite.rohit@gmail.com"
ReplyDelete@ Rohit - The only way to fix an iPod Shuffle that I know of is to restore it, reset it and make sure you don't corrupt the data in it by unplugging it improperly. Apart from that, there is nothing more you can do to a shuffle except replace the shuffle.
ReplyDeleteMy ipod shuffle is still not working. I have restored 2 times, I have updated about 3 times, and I loaded all of my songs on a billion times! WHAT SHOULD I DO!?
ReplyDeleteYou might want to try http://beyondteck.blogspot.com/2007/09/stop-green-orange-blinking-lights-on.html to make sure you unplug your iPod properly, I think that might be the factor that is causing the problem.
ReplyDeleteI got an ipod
ReplyDeleteand i properly put songs on it from itunes and it worked! so then i wanted to put some new songs the same way i did before, and when the Ipod sync was complete i took my ipod out, and then when i pressed play it blinked green red green red green red. What do i do?
I already deleted the songs and snyced then all over again. Help?
Hello Jessica,
ReplyDeleteLIke I've mentioned before, it seems as though you're not unplugging your iPod properly. Do try the fix mentioned at http://beyondteck.blogspot.com/2007/09/stop-green-orange-blinking-lights-on.html and it should most likely work properly.
Hope this helps!
hi,
ReplyDeletei tried doing wat u said on the post ,but my ipod still doesnt work. it keeps having orange and green light flashing when i press play.
any ideas?
Hi zen,
ReplyDeleteGiven the nature of the shuffle, its really hard to predict what you're doing wrong. Anyway, did you try the tips mentioned in all the posts or just this post? If you do try the tips in all the posts, as those are the only tips I know of, like trying to use other software to sync with the iPod and so on. If that doesn't solve the problem then you might have to search for a solution at your local apple store. Who knows, they might even replace it for you because it had problems?
Hope this helps!
the new itunes 7.7 is what is causing the problem.
ReplyDeleteWhen you plug in your shuffle, itunes should pop up.
right underneath your ipod on the left hand menu there should be a folder titled "PODCASTS",
delete this and your ipod should work!
i found it on the apple ipod help site, there has been problems and i had a problem with mine!
this should solve it if it has just happened within the last few days.

ReplyDeleteGood morrow sir marble.
ReplyDeleteI ought to say that the restore options do not rest in thine all programs menu. Instead, you'll have to open iTunes and then clicketh on the ipod in thy left column, and ye shall be presented with the ol' restore button. I hope that I helpeth thee.
hi, having great difficalty with my shuffle! when plugged in it asks 2 be restored but only when i try 2 it comes up "unknown error occured(1439) ?? this is my 2nd shuffle and this 1's never even been used and has already been replaced by the shop it was bought from!! help...........
ReplyDeleteHi Nice Blog The new battery will install only one way because of the length of the connecting wires, so plug it in and lay it down on the hard drive. Line it up so that one edge isn't hanging off, and press it firmly so that the adhesive grips it. Once this is done, you can just snap the metal half of the case back on. Charge up your new ipod batteries, and your iPod will have juice again!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, I now have a fantastic piece of working kit.
ReplyDeleteRegards
Mike
Ok, here is my issue. I bought my ipod shuffle a year ago and it has been working fine, great in fact. But then i installed vista on my laptop and guess what? it doesn't work. I updated to the latest itunes, i restored it to its original factory stetting, i tried everything but when i plug in my ipod, the itunes read it but it won't let me put any music.. its keeps on coming to some error about missing a device or something like that.
ReplyDeletePlease help.. any feedback or advice would be extremely grateful.
thanks!
I have just got a new shuffle for christmas and I have charged it for 7 hours and it hasent turned on! it also wont show me the setup thing in the beginning..

ReplyDeleteMy Ipod will no longer charge, and when I put it tio charge it say's"Plese Wait, very low battery". What does this mean?!? Please help me..
ReplyDelete@All Anonymous Folks,
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I cannot provide more guidance than the articles already mentioned on this post... It seems like there might be hardware failure problems with the iPod shuffle that are simply incorrigible.
Even Apple sometimes refuses to fix these problems, and simply replaces the iPod. So, I guess your best bet would be to call Apple/go to an apple store and get a replacement for your shuffle if you're getting weird errors and problems.
If its only the green/orange light problem, then see my post on the green/orange light.
I know it isn't much, but I hope this helps.
Good luck!
@Rishi
ReplyDeleteYour safe unplugging tip worked for me!
Many thanks

ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteI bought an ipod shuffle yesterday and it worked fine..I mean I installed the itunes software and downloaded music into the gadget and it played nice and strong. But everytime I want to charge it, the amber light keeps blinking. This, as the forums say is either due to the ipod syncing or if its being used as disk storage. The second one is true here and the ipod is indeed showing up as storage media. But the enable disk use option is unclicked. Please help.
my pc shows that IPOD can't synced.the required space not found. what should i do ?

ReplyDeleteHey my ipod shuffle wont let me delete the songs on it. I go to the contents of my ipod and delete my songs so I can put new music on it but it keeps telling me I dont have enough room for more songs. It didnt make sense to me because there is plenty of room. So I decided to eject my ipod and try it again, once I clicked the contents of my ipod again all the songs that I had supposedly deleated were back on my ipod! So then I decide to just restore it. I waited for a whole hour and a half for it to restore and then I just gave up.

ReplyDeleteI have the Ipod 2nd generation Shuffle. I used the Ipod Restore Utility last night. I restored the hardware for my Ipod, brought up all the information for it. I tried to use the utility to restore my mom's Ipod and her's would not restore. Problem is, now mine will not longer connect to the computer. When I connect it, I get 3 orange blinks and then nothing. It is no longer recognized by Windows or Itunes. What should I do?
ReplyDeleteI have the Ipod touch and it currently keeps stopping. When you have it on shuffle it will play one or two songs and then will stop. Does anybody have this problem and if so how did you correct it.
ReplyDeletei have a ipod shuffle 2nd generation. My problem is whenever i am transferring songs from itunes or whether transferring files through it, i find it very slow. the transfer rate will start from 5mbps i think and the goes all the way down to 5-20 kbps. it takes 1 hour to transfer just 10 songs and in some occasions, it will just stop and what i will do is restore my ipod and start from the top again. hope someone knows what to do.

ReplyDeleteThe best way to recover lost data from damaged iPod device is to make use of a valid backup file. in case if there is no backup file avaible then in such situation users will no other option but to make use of a reliable third party utility for iPod data recovery.
